Unmasked - Corruption in the West

You are warmly invited to a TIGETalk on Tuesday 4 April. Laurence Cockcroft and Malini Mehra will speak on the theme of his new book, Unmasked: corruption in the West.

Corruption is systemic and endemic in the West. It includes ‘the corruption of influence’ through the huge sums spent on political lobbying. It infects a range of business sectors and includes organized crime, human trafficking, money laundering and tax avoidance. What can be done to address the scale of the problem? What strength of character is needed to resist the lure of filthy lucre? Cockcroft will summarise the issues raised by the book and Mehra will join him in outlining some solutions to the way forward.

His professional background is as a development economist with extensive experience in Africa working for governments, the private sector and charitable bodies. In his work with TI he is particularly associated with pressure for the UK’s Bribery Act and with the issue of corruption in the global arms trade. His earlier book Global Corruption: Money, Power and Ethics in the Modern World (2012), examined the impact of corruption in the developing world. His new book, co-authored with Anne-Christine Wegener, addresses corruption in politics and finance in the US and the EU.
