Celebrating World Refugee Day - Different Pasts, Shared Future

To mark World Refugee Day, Initiatives of Change is launching the Refugees as Re-Builders training course, hosted by Tom Brake MP, at the House of Commons followed by an evening celebration.

Refugees can be rebuilders of the nations from which they fled – when the time is right, and if they are welcomed by host populations and given access to appropriate training. Refugees as Re-Builders aims to empower refugees by giving them access to knowledge and skills regarding nation-building that they would not otherwise receive through academic studies or work experience. We will hear from refugees who have made significant contributions to their countries of origin, and from graduates of the pilot Refugees as Re-Builders course.

Following the launch, you are invited to an evening event at Initatives of Change, 24 Greencoat Place, London SW1P 1RD at 7.30pm till 10pm. Hear from Cllr Rakhia Ismail, the first female Somali Councillor and first black female cabinet member in Islington; Daniel Trilling, a British journalist, editor of New Humanist magazine and author of Lights in the Distance: Exile and Refuge at the Borders of Europe, on the theme of migration; Professor Gaim Kibreab, a Research Professor and Course Director of the MSc Refugee Studies at London South Bank University, School of Law and Social Sciences in the Department of Social Science and Caroline Namugabi who is the founder and president of the Uganda Youth forum UK, a psychologist and human rights activist and editor of Challenges of Identity; A Psychological Perspective.  There will be poetry by Faith Rose and music by Mohammed Khabaz.
