Letlapa Mphalele is visiting the UK to speak on the theme of shared humanity. Letlapa commanded the South African Liberation Army (APLA) during apartheid times. Until 2013 he was President of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and an MP in the South African parliament. In 1993 he ordered several retaliatory massacres against white civilians. One of those killed was a white South African student, Lyndi Fourie. Her mother, Ginn Fourie, later met, and forgave, Letlapa. The story of their work together for reconciliation is told in the award-winning film, Beyond Forgiving, an extract of which will be shown during the evening.

Initiatives of Change International invites you to a public event with Letlapa Mphahlele, commander of the South African Liberation Army (APLA) during apartheid times. Letlapa was once a man who ordered retaliatory massacres of white civilians. Now he sees the whole of humanity as 'my people'. Letlapa is a protagonist in the award-winning film, 'Beyond Forgiving', which demonstrates that it is possible to transcend the horror of past injustice, violence and loss and go beyond forgiving to helping others. An excerpt of the film will be shown during the evening.

Director: Imad Karam - 28 mins. In 1993 post-apartheid South Africa, Letlapa Mphalele, a guerrilla commander, ordered a shooting in a pub in Cape Town in which a white girl, Lyndi Fourie was killed. The film traces Lyndi’s mother Ginn’s quest to meet the man responsible for her killing, and the self-discovery that both experienced as a result.

Beyond Forgiving in Coventry

The award-winning documentary film Beyond Forgiving will be screened in the Humber Lecture Theatre, Covernty, at 6 pm on 3 November, hosted by the Coventry Branch of the United Nations Association of the United Kingdom. This will be followed by Q&A discussion.

Beyond ‘them and us’ - towards a common humanity

Building a common humanity needs the bricks and mortar of integration. If we are committed to walk the talk towards a common humanity, we should personally take the initiative to reach out to the people who are different from us. People who, loosely speaking, come from other groups. We should listen with empathy why people hold sacred things we view as ordinary, and treat as ordinary things we glorify.
